    Testimonial (2010-02-10 @ 10:16:26)
    Billy,
Thanks for the shoes. I hope you can use the following as a testimonial on your web site.

"I am the Head Track & Field(& Throws) Coach at Manhattan College. We have had throwers go to our NCAA Division I-A National Championships all 23 years I have been at Manhattan. We have recently tried the VS Athletics throwing & lifting shoes with our top throwers(including Jake Freeman - the 2009 #1 Hammer Thrower in the USA). The rotational shoe gives great support and turns easy on our circles and will be using them for all our throwers soon. The lifting shoes are very supportive and worked well with all our field event athletes. These are some of the best shoes we have found, especially for the price!"

Final VS Athletics 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials Report
    Sunday, July 6

ARIS BORJAS PLACES 10TH IN THE MEN’S JAVELIN
Ashley Lodreé (Hurdles) and Brent Gray (200m) Advance to Quarterfinals

EUGENE, OR—The final four days of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials featured 5 more members of the VS Athletics Track Club competing in their first Olympic Team selection meet. Thursday, July 3, had an early evening schedule of events and started with Matt Carter competing in the Men’s High Jump qualifying. When the event began at 7:20pm, temperatures had dropped some 30-degrees from the afternoon high of 91 and a gusty crosswind, partially blocked by the West grandstands, played havoc with the jumpers just as they began the bottom of their “J” approach to the crossbar. As a result, a first-attempt clearance of just 7’ ½” (2.15m) pared the field of 26 to 13—the number advanced to Sunday’s final. Matt cleared on his 3rd attempt, then exited the competition with 2 close misses at 2.20m (7’ 2 ½”). “I allowed myself to get way too nervous, way too soon, he said afterward. I learned a lot today about how I need to keep my composure if I want to compete well in a meet like this.”

Friday, July 4, saw some VS fireworks at three more VS athletes entered Olympic Trials competition, beginning with Aris Borjas in the Men’s Javelin qualifying. Ranked #22 in the field of 24 coming into the meet, Aris said he knew most of his competitors would not think he would be a factor…and that he would use that lack of pressure to try to get a good throw off early. He did. The last to throw in flight-1, Aris opened with a promising throw of 232’ 4” (70.83m) as most of the field fell far short of their qualifying marks. Then, on his 2nd throw, Aris boomed a 3-foot PR of 239’ 8” (73.05m)—good for 3rd place in his flight. In flight-2, that mark was bettered by only 6 of the 12 throwers, so Aris advanced to Sunday’s final with the 9th best throw of the day. Brent Gray followed Aris’ success in the Javelin with a 2nd place finish in heat-1 of the Men’s 200 meter qualifying in 20.64 to advance to the quarterfinals. Coming off a 5th place finish at the NCAA Championships, Brent was also the 2008 Big West Conference and NCAA West Region 100/200 champion for Long Beach State. Unfortunately, Brent’s former Long Beach State teammate, Ronald Carter, didn’t fare as well in the Men’s Triple Jump qualifying. After an encouraging 51’ 3” (15.62m) opening jump from well behind the take-off board, his next two jumps were only 46’ 7” and 50’ 11”.

On Saturday, July 5, Ashley Lodreé was on the track for the Women’s 100m Hurdles. Injured most of the season and running her first hurdle race since May 24, she posted a 13.39 mark into a -2.6mps wind to place 4th in her heat and advance to the quarterfinals later in the day. Brent Gray was up next in the Men’s 200 meter quarterfinals. Off to a slow start on the curve, Brent moved up to 5th at the finish line in 21.14—leaving him tied for 17th…one place away from advancing to the semifinal. In contrast, Ashley Lodreé got off to a very fast start in heat-1 of the Women’s 100m Hurdle quarterfinals, but clobbered hurdle #3, stumbled upon landing, and was unable to finish the race.

That left Aris Borjas in the Men’s Javelin Final as the only VS athlete competing on Sunday, July 6—the final day of the Olympic Trials—when competitors found themselves throwing directly into a steady 12mph wind...the least desirable wind conditions for the event. Aris had two narrow sector fouls in the 232’ range that would have placed him among the top 8 after three throws and given him 3 more in the finals. But his one legal throw of 225’ 8” (68.78m) left him in 10th place—an outstanding accomplishment nonetheless.

In summary, VS Athletics Track Club Executive Director Skip Stolley said, “We are very proud of the nine athletes who represented us here over the past 2-weeks. Just qualifying to compete here as one of the top Americans in their events was no small accomplishment. Jeff Ryan, Ben Clark, Blessing Ufodiama, Chris Richardson, Matt Carter, Brent Gray, Ronald Carter, Ashley Lodreé, and Aris Borjas all have at least one more Olympic Trials in their futures and the experience of competing in this crucible was invaluable. That experience will pay off next year when we return to Eugene for the 2009 USA Championships, where they will be joined by several other VS athletes to compete for positions on one of the USA Teams that will be selected next summer.”

CHRIS RICHARDSON PLACES 16TH IN OLYMPIC TRIALS DECATHLON

EUGENE, OR—Just 5-weeks after winning the Decathlon at the Big West Conference Championships and placing 4th at the 2008 NCAA Championships, recent Long Beach State graduate Chris Richardson arrived to lock horns with America’s finest multi-event athletes in Track & Field’s toughest competition—the two day, ten event Decathlon—at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Among the youngest competitors in the field, Chris also had to contend with sweltering temperatures in the mid-90’s, the after effects of recent dental surgery, and a nagging pain in his left knee.

Day-1 on Sunday, June 29, began at 10:0am with the 100 meters. Not one of Chris’ better events, he ran 11.41 into a slight headwind—worth 771 points positioning him 16th in the 20 man field. The Long Jump was next…one of his best events with a PR of 25’ 6”. After opening with a foul, Chris jumped 23’ 11 ½”. Then on his 3rd and final jump, he came through with a jump of 7.44m (24’ 1”)—the 4th best jump of the competition—which moved him all the way up to 4th in the overall standings after 2-events.

With just a 30-40 minute interval between each event, the Shot Put, was next—one of his most improved events in which he had raised his PR to 52’ 6” this season. Using an unfamiliar shiny, slippery titanium shot (one of the “common” implements that are provided for athletes who didn’t bring their own), Chris fouled his first 2 throws before finishing with an anemic 44’ 11 ½ ” on this 3rd attempt, dropping him in the standings all the way down to 14th place.

Event #4 on day-1 is the High Jump where Chris has a PR of 6’ 7”. However his sore left knee slowed his usual quick take-off. After clearing 6’ 1 ½”, Chris passed at 6’ 2 ¾”, then had 3 misses at 6’ 4”, dropping him 19th in the overall standings. When the decathletes lined up for the final event of day-1—the 400 meters—they had been on the track for 5 ½ hours on the hottest June 29 ever recorded in Eugene. With most of the field in “survival mode”, Chris placed 3rd in the 7-man heat-3 in 51.70 and finished the day in 16th place with 3826 points.

After 20-minutes in an ice bath and an evening of massage and chiropractic care from our medical support staff of Dr. Paul Copeskey and four therapists from Fremont College in Cerritos led by Lance Followell, Chris was out the door at 8:00am the next morning to wage battle with his competitors, another blazing hot day, and a new set of aches and pains. Welcome to the life of a Decathlete.

Event-1 in day-2 of the Decathlon is the 110m Hurdles. Chris ran a sore-legged 15.14—compared to his 14.46 best—which dropped him to 17th in the standings. But there is no quit in Chris and he rebounded in the Discus with a throw of 146’ 0”—the 7th best in the competition—to climb up 6-places to 13th position in the overall standings in the 20-man field after 7-events.

The pole vault was next—another of Chris’ most improved events. Surprisingly, he jumped 14’ 5 ¼” and had two close misses at 14’ 9” to stay in 13th place in the standings. Event #9 in the Decathlon is the Javelin, Chris’ best event where his 226’ 4” PR was 2nd only to reigning Olympic and World Champion, Brian Clay. This was a seminal event for Chris and his last chance to move up dramatically in the standings before the torturous 1500 meter finale. On this day, however, none of the stars were lined up properly for Chris and his 182’ 10” throw only moved him up two places into 11th.

People who enjoy watching the Decathlon 1500 meters enjoy watching the wings pulled off of butterflies as, after 9 events, even the best athletes in the world struggle to stagger 3 ¾ laps around the track at 5-minute mile pace. Chris gave it his all and was up in 12th place at 1000 meters. But from there he faded to cross the finish line in 5:12.35—which by then looked like a triage center. Ahead, Bryan Clay recorded the 3rd highest score in history with 8832 points, Texan Trey Hardee recorded a 200-point 8534 PR, and the amazing Tom Pappas made his 3rd Olympic Team with a score of 8511 in 3rd place.

Chris finished 16th in the overall standings with a score of 7312 points. His coach, VS multi-event specialist Dave Rodda, said, “No one in his right mind would do two Decathlons with in 3-weeks before the Olympic Trials. But Chris is grateful for all that Long Beach State has done to support his development into an elite athlete and wanted to take on the challenge. There will be
other Olympic Trials in Chris’ future, but this was his last NCAA Championship. He is a special athlete and has been a very special person to coach for the past 3-years.”
VS Athletics Executive Director, Skip Stolley, added, “There isn’t anyone in the sport who doesn’t expect Chris to become one of the Decathlon’s brightest stars leading up to the 2012 Games in London. It’s going to be very exciting for us to be along with him for that ride.”

VS Athletics 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials Report
    Wednesday, July 2

JEFF RYAN ADVANCES TO MEN’S POLE VAULT FINAL

EUGENE, OR—On the opening day of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, Jeff Ryan advanced to the final of the Men’s pole vault. Jeff cleared 5.40m on his first attempt, then had a huge clearance at 5.50m (18’ ½”) to earn a place in the 12-man final on Sunday. Those who did not advance included 2000 Olympic Champion, Nick Hysong. Unfortunately, Jeff didn’t fare as well in the final in which he no-heighted. He was the first of five vaulters scheduled to enter the competition at the 5.40m (17’ 8 ½”) opening height. However, shortly after missing his initial attempt, he was told he had 90-seconds to complete a 2nd jump after the other 4 vaulters passed. Unprepared to jump again so soon, Jeff missed his 2nd jump at 5.40m. His request for more time before his next attempt was denied—and he was right back in the same situation of having to get back on the runway for his 3rd attempt. Afterward, Jeff said, “I’ve never been one to get involved in the height-passing game and this time I really got stung. I should have passed to 5.50m after my first miss at 5.40m.”

Also competing in the first 4-days of the Olympic Trials for VS Athletics were Blessing Ufodiama in the Women’s Triple Jump and Ben Clark in the Men’s 400m Hurdles. In flight-2 of the Triple Jump qualifying round, Blessing opened with a jump of 13.14m (43’ ½”). Her 2nd jump was a narrow board foul in the 44 ½ foot range that would have gotten her to the finals. On her 3rd jump she had a huge hop phase, but couldn’t hold the landing and ran through the pit. Afterward, Blessing said, “What I learned today is that competing in a meet like this is all mental. Going forward, that’s where I’m going to make my biggest improvement.”

In the Men’s 400m Hurdles, Ben Clark also had a day where things weren’t clicking on all cylinders.
Drawing lane-8 in heat-1 of the prelims (the 8th time he’s had the outside-most lane in 11 races this season) he got out well and was with the leaders before stuttering at hurdle-5 and quickly dropping back into 4th place. Then his lead leg buckled upon landing after hurdle-7. Somehow, Ben kept from falling. But his stumble left him in 8th place at the finish line in 50.88. “I’m very disappointed, he said afterward. I’m a good technical hurdler and this was a very poor technical race. 50.35 made the semi-final and I should have been one of them.”

“We share their disappointment, observed Club Executive Director, Skip Stolley, but remain very proud of Jeff, Blessing, and Ben. Jeff has developed into one of America’s top-12 vaulters and will be a 19-foot jumper soon. After a 3-year hiatus from the sport during which she had her first child, Blessing has had a terrific comeback year raising her PR to 43’ 5 ½” and qualifying for the Olympic Trials. Next year, she’ll be competing at the international level. And we believe Ben is at the doorstep of being a star. He brings 46-low 400 meter speed and good hurdle skills to the event and has made a good transition to a new locale (Los Angeles), a new coach (Cedric Hill), and a new training program. 2009 will be a breakout year for him.”

After two rest days, the U.S. Olympic Trials resume on Thursday, July 3. Competing for VS Athletics will be
Ronald Carter (Men’s Triple Jump), Brent Gray (Men’s 200 meters), Ashley Lodree (Women’s 100m Hurdles), Matt Carter (Men’s High Jump), and Aris Borjas (Men’s Javelin)

    UPS Rates (2007-05-25 @ 14:04:44)
UPS and Fedex now charge Dimensional weight for Air shipments. This means a large or irregular package will be charged based on its box size rather than weight, to a limit. This effects our business 2 ways:
    1. Small orders that have heavy items like shot puts can take advantage of this as the package would be small.
    2. Items that are irregular like javelins and very large size shoes (13 and higher) would be in bigger boxes and cost more to ship.

Theres not much we can do about these charges. Along with the rising cost of fuel, UPS raises their surcharges. We have always charged rates based on actual costs. Please keep in mind, the website is just an estimate on freight. We'll keep looking for ways to lower our costs so we can pass them on to our customers.

    Paypal and USPS (2006-06-27 @ 16:05:43)
US Postal service now has Priority Mail shoe boxes, making one-shoe orders very easy to mail. Not every shoe can fit however into thier box. Postage on a shoe ranges from $9-10 which is what UPS charges anyway. Call us to use this option if you must have a shoe go to a PO box.

We no longer accept Paypal. Sorry.

    AK/HI Shipping (2005-07-11 @ 13:09:56)
UPS now offers "Ground" Shipping to Alaksa and Hawaii. It is really just "delayed air shipping". The website should estimate those charges but AK/HI customers should know they have more options now. Be aware that these rates do NOT include extended area surcharges that will incur if you live in one of those areas. See UPS's website for details.

    Additional Images (2005-07-21 @ 11:44:25)
We now feature additional product images for certain products. If you feel like becoming famous, send us a picture featuring our product and we'll consider featuring it on the website. You'll earn a free shoebag or other gift. You can email them to sales@vsathletics.com.

    P.O.'s (2003-08-05 @ 16:56:36)
Coaches at Schools that use Purchase Orders may order online and then fax the PO to us at 888-415-5212. We'll process it as soon as we get the fax.
